Yachtmaster Coastal(Coastal Skipper) Practical

The Yachtmaster Coastal five day course is for the more experienced, the course covers the topics of Day Skipper, but in greater depth, perfecting skills and techniques for coastal and offshore passages by day or night.

The minimum pre-course experience is 15 days on board (2 as skipper), 300 sea miles and 8 night hours. It is assumed that your ability will be to Yachtmaster Coastal theory for navigation and Day Skipper Practical for boat handling.

Over the course you will log at least 100 miles and 4 night hours. There will be an opportunity to show ability as Skipper – to take charge, make decisions, plan and implement passages, organise navigation, deckwork and domestic duties.

On completion you should be able to skipper a motor cruiser on coastal passages by day or night, and will gain the Yachtmaster Coastal Practical Course Completion Certificate.

After, you may wish to undergo the RYA/DoT Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence exam. If you have gained the Yachtmaster Coastal Course Completion Certificate, the sea time required is 20 days (2 as skipper), 400 sea miles and 12 night hours. Without this you must have, within the last 10 years, 30 days on board (2 as skipper), 800 sea miles and 12 night hours. You must also hold the VHF/SRC Radio Operators Licence and a recognised valid First Aid Certificate. To obtain commercial endorsement of this qualification you will need a Sea Survival Certificate and an RYA/DoT current medical.

The minimum age for this course is 17 years.
